Narrow Band Imaging

2015

Objectives: Narrow band imaging (NBI) is supposed to be a technique for a better visualization of vessel structures in superficial tissue as it selects the wavelengths of hemoglobin. It was hypothesized that, in the regular follow-up examination of patients with recurrent laryngeal papillomatosis, NBI enables a better detection of laryngeal papillomatosis in contrast to normal white light endoscopy. Methods: Eleven patients, 10 with a known recurrent papillomatosis (8 with a relapse, 2 without) and 1 with a primary diagnosis of papillomatosis, were examined with normal white light and NBI endoscopy. Twenty-six video sequences (11 white, 11 NBI, 4 doubled for validity) were generated and ran…

Advanced imaging of the gastrointestinal tract: research vs. clinical tools?

2009

Diagnostic endoscopy has moved forward considerably in the recent years. Still, three major needs have to be satisfied: endoscopy should be able to detect a lesion, characterize the lesion, and then its nature should be confirmed. These steps should ideally translate into an immediate therapeutic decision.High definition endoscopy has optimized our endoscopic view onto the mucosa and can be combined with digital surface enhancement modalities. Chromoendoscopy still holds a place to detect especially flat lesions in high-risk patients such as ulcerative colitis. Digital chromoendoscopy techniques such as narrow band imaging, i-scan, or Fuji intelligent chromo endoscopy offer new possibilitie…

Endoscopic assessment and grading of Barrett's esophagus using magnification endoscopy and narrow-band imaging: accuracy and interobserver agreement …

2010

Background: Three different classification systems for the evaluation of Barrett's esophagus (BE) using magnification endoscopy (ME) and narrow-band imaging (NBI) have been proposed. Until now, no comparative and external evaluation of these systems in a clinical-like situation has been performed. Objective: To compare and validate these 3 classification systems. Design: Prospective validation study. Setting: Tertiary-care referral center. Nine endoscopists with different levels of expertise from Europe and Japan participated as assessors. Patients: Thirty-two patients with long-segment BE. Interventions: From a group of 209 standardized prospective recordings collected on BE by using …

Chromoendoscopy and narrow-band imaging compared with high-resolution magnification endoscopy in Barrett's esophagus.

2008

Background & Aims: The aim of this study was to compare magnified still images obtained with high-resolution white light endoscopy, indigo carmine chromoendoscopy, acetic acid chromoendoscopy, and narrow-band imaging to determine the best technique for use in Barrett's esophagus. Methods: We obtained magnified images from 22 areas with the 4 aforementioned techniques. Seven endoscopists with no specific expertise in Barretes esophagus or advanced imaging techniques and 5 international experts in this field evaluated these 22 areas for overall image quality, mucosal image quality, and vascular image quality. In addition, the regularity of mucosal and vascular patterns and the presence of abn…

NBI and Laryngeal Papillomatosis: A Diagnostic Challenge: A Systematic Review.

2022

Narrow-band imaging (NBI) represents a valid aid in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) diagnosis for detecting vascular changes. However, LSCC and laryngeal papillomatosis (LP) show similar vascular patterns that may lead to misdiagnosis and improper treatment. This review aims to deepen this NBI limit in order to stress a careful preoperative evaluation of laryngeal lesions. The research was carried out on PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus databases using specific keywords. The topic of research was assessed by these parameters: accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values. This review included only five articles: they demonstrated that NBI is bette…

Systematic review of the diagnosis of gastric premalignant conditions and neoplasia with high-resolution endoscopic technologies

2013

Aim. The aim of the article is to systematically review the current evidence on the diagnostic use of narrow band imaging (NBI), flexible spectral imaging color enhancement (FICE) and endoscopic image enhancement technology i-scan endoscopies for gastric precancerous and cancerous lesions. Materials and methods. Original manuscripts were searched in PubMed until October 2012. Pertinent data were collected and pooled diagnostic accuracy measures were estimated when possible. Results. In total, 38 studies were evaluated. Thirty-one studies were included for NBI and 7 studies for FICE assessment in this systematic review. No article was found meeting inclusion criteria for i-scan endoscopy. Th…

The Impact of Narrow-band Imaging on the Pre- and Intra- operative Assessments of Neoplastic and Preneoplastic Laryngeal Lesions. A Systematic Review

2020

Abstract Introduction Narrow-band imaging is an endoscopic diagnostic tool that, focusing on superficial vascular changes, is useful to detect suspicious laryngeal lesions, enabling their complete excision with safe and tailored resection margins. Objectives To analyze the applications and benefits of narrow-band imaging in detecting premalignant and malignant laryngeal lesions through a comparison with white-light endoscopy. Data Synthesis A literature search was performed in the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases using strict keywords. Then, two authors independently analyzed the articles, read the titles and abstracts, and read completely only the relevant studies according to c…

Novel non-invasive Adjunctive Techniques for Early Oral Cancer Diagnosis and Oral Lesions Examination

2012

Oral cancer is a potentially fatal disease with an increasing incidence and an unchanged 5-year mortality rate. Unfortunately, oral cancer is often still late diagnosed, which leads to an increase in the likelihood of functional impairment due to treatment and mortality rate. Definitive diagnosis of oral cancer must be confirmed by scalpel biopsy and histological assessment. However despite its benefits, scalpel biopsy is invasive and it is burdened by a potential morbidity. Furthermore, previous studies have suggested a high degree of intraobserver and interobserver variability regarding the histological evaluation of malignancy. As a consequence, in recent years there has been a growing a…

Endoscopic detection of early lower gastrointestinal cancer

2005

The prognosis for patients with malignancies of the lower gastrointestinal tract is strictly dependent on early detection of premalignant and malignant lesions. What should an ideal screening and surveillance colonoscopy be able to accomplish? The technique should allow detection of large but also discrete mucosal alterations. Ideally, endoscopic discrimination between neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions would be possible during the ongoing procedure. At present, endoscopy can be performed with powerful new endoscopes. Comparable to the rapid development in chip technology, the optical features of the newly designed endoscopes offer resolutions, which allow new surface details to be seen.…
